I can't believe it is the end of September, but that is only half the story. Since my last HOOTS post, we have had THREE great rides! Thanks to Don and Chris Kirk, who hosted the ride and barbecue August 2nd, Pat and Margaret Donnelly for the now famous Tour De DQ(^3) August 23rd, and Ian Seecof and Cheryl Sunman another edition of the Farm Fest ride on September 13. These were all great rides with a mix of new and old faces, and thanks to all the 2009 HOOTS leaders for their efforts.
Also, since the last update, Dolly and Don Craft hosted our first organization meeting for the
2010 Midwest Tandem Rally, to be hosted in Shipshewana, IN, September 3-6, 2010. We already have the
jersey design, and
lodging information is now available. Watch for updates over the coming months, and registration will open in early January
Linda and I made both the August rides, but I was busing prepping for the
2009 DALMAC, (Dick Allen, Lansing to Mackinac) tour over Labor Day weekend in my home state of Michigan. This was the 39th annual edition, and my 5th time since first attending in 1974. I finally made the ride on a tandem, with my youngest son, Justin (14), stoking. We rode the 5-day UP route, covering 400 miles from Lansing to Detour Village in Michigan's upper peninsula. (DALMAC has over 2,400 participants riding 5 different 4 or 5 day options). One of the highlights of this supported tour is riding the 5-mile long
Mackinac Bridge, which carries you 200 feet over the Straights of Mackinac. We had an incredible trip with ideal weather. I have added a few pictures here, and have the full trip on
Flickr.
Being on DALMAC meant I wasn't in Rochester for MTR 2009, but many HOOTS were. Don and Dolly Craft made the 2010 presentation, which was well received. If you did attend, it is not too late post an update!
The last few weeks were also personally challenging, with some major changes in my employment situation. The end result is that I have joined the team at
Bicycle Garage Indy, where I will be working on their marketing efforts. I am very excited to be back in the bicycle industry again, and working with the award winning team at BGI.
Finally, Linda and I are happy to be leading 2009 HOOTS Fall Finale ride, from Cool Creek Park in Carmel, on Sunday, October 18. We hope you can join us for a relatively flat and quiet ride the weekend before Hilly 100.
Good Cycling, and keep it safe,
Jay Hardcastle
